So I created a Tools section for the site. I plan to flesh it out as the days go on. So far I created a basic BMR Calculator.
BMR Calculator
I did it for the Weight Loss Formulas post. I hope it is useful to my readers. Check it out and let me know what you think. If you have any thoughts for other tools that would be useful please let me know.
Weight loss is all about the numbers. In fact it is all about a single diet equation.
Calories in – Calories out = Weight Change
This equation is responsible for every single weight loss product that works. Its simple, elegant, and free. It can be understood by anyone, but is overlooked by nearly everyone these days. The fact that it is free is why no one promotes it. No one can make money off just telling your to eat less and move more. So they talk about other things. Hormones, specific exercise routines, diet plans, avoid these food and eat these foods. These all may play some part in weight loss but not nearly as big a role as Ci – Co = WC. So lets break it down so you can get started.
Less Calories in, and More Calories Out will tip the balance in your favor
Michael Pollan is an author who has been writing almost exclusively about food for ten years. He writes about where our food comes from, how it gets to us, and what it is doing to us. He says.
Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.
This is his advice on eating healthy in 7 words. And that’s it, article over.
OK not really. It does require some explaining in order for it to be useful. Lets break it down into 3 parts.
Eat food.
Michael breaks things down into “Food” and “Edible Food Like Substances (FLS).” Food is a raw material. Food requires no (or very little) packaging. Food Rots. Food is on the outside walls of the grocery store. Food doesn’t contain ingredients (or if it does they are all pronounceable).Food doesn’t have any marketing campaign. Food is something your Great Great Grandmother would recognize.
Food Like Substance is all the stuff in the middle of the super market. It contains unpronounceable ingredients. It has health claims on the box. It is packaged to have a very long shelf life. FLS have massive marketing campaigns.
In the immortal words of Henry Ford “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” on a similar vein if you think weight loss is difficult then it will be, if you think it’ll be easy then you are on your way to results.
No real relation to the post (except the name of the song is My Own Wrost Enemy).
I”m not into new age crap, but I know from experience that YOU are your worst enemy when it comes to making any change. A mindset is the first and most important thing you need to concentrate on. The good news is that it gets easier as you see results. Weight loss is like any other long term project, it looks too difficult and not worth the effort at the start. If you jump in and start the work after a while you will see that the destination is getting closer and your starting point is getting further away.
So jump in and believe you can get the results you want.
The Dead Simple Advice: Weight Loss and getting fit starts with a mindset, believe its easy and it will be.
I know there is an overload of diet and fitness information out there. When I decided to get my weight in check I felt like I was suffering from information paralysis. There is so much out there. Everyone seems to contradict each other. I hope to make this a resource for the simplest and most easily followed advice on Diet and Fitness.
In January of 2009 I was 210lbs, 24.7% body fat, and a BMI of 30.3. I was considered obese. This didn’t bother me but what did bother me was that I continued to gain weight. I decided to make a change. As of this post I weigh 174lbs I am officially no longer considered overweight. I will be getting my body fat checked on April 9th. I’ve lost most of my weight in the last 3 months. I don’t tell you this to brag, though I am proud. I tell you this to let you know where I was and how far I have come. I want you to trust what I say because it worked for me.
I’m not an expert, but I am a geek. I obsessed over weight loss and fitness for months. I read journals, scientific studies, blogs, books, and everything else I could get my hands on. I feel like I found the formula for what works.
