Weight loss is all about calories

So I apologies for my long absence.  I had quite a hecktic summer and something had to give.  I hope that things are settling down, and I can recommit to blogging regularly, because honestly I miss it.  Anyway enough about me.

Twinkie

Twinkies are effective diet foods

This article is all about the Twinkie. This blog only has 14 posts so far, and 5 of them (6 now) are directly related to eating less.  Thats over 1/3rd of the posts on this site all devoted to one simple idea.  I’d feel guilty about this, but Brad Pilon wrote a whole book devoted to the subject.  So here it is: If you want to lose weight consume less calories than you burn.  Thats all there is to it.  When people start saying it is more complicated than that they are likely trying to sell you something.

So why did I resurect this seemingly dead (or dying) blog to repeat the same thing one more time?  Because I found this great example of the priciple in action.  Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, spent 10 weeks eating Twinkies, Little Debbie, Doritoes, Oreos etc etc.  At the end of the 10 weeks was he dead?  Nope not even close, He was actually 27lbs lighter.  In addition his bmi went from 28.8 to 24.9.  Is LDL (bad colesteral) dropped 20% and his HDL (good colesteral) rose 20%.

So how did Mark do it?  Where these special lab modified Twinkies?  Nope all he did was count calories and make sure he consumed less than he burned.  He limited his diet to 1800 calories per day, when he was burning roughly 2600.  Now before you go filling your pantry with Hostess products, Mark didn’t only eat snacks, he also ate the proper servings of vegies, as well as a proein shake each day.

Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds

Dead Simple Advice: So when someone tells you the key to losing weight is eating more vegetables, or eating more protein or eating more whole grain, they are missing the point.  The key is only to eat less calories.

Good illustration, we all know to eat less will make you weigh less but the hardest part is using the right strategy suitable for the long term or is it for the short term?
Of course twinkie eating is a novelty and would be OK if you have other food to create a balance. Every week I will eat either pizza, chocolates, cake or beer and my body fat is around 9% but it understanding what you need to do to complete the overall picture.

You are exactly right and you shouldn’t apologize for continuing to hammer the same point home. There is too much miss information out there about how to lose fat, and people need to hear the truth. You can eat fat. You can eat carbs. You can drink beer, but you have to maintain a caloric deficit throughout the week to lose weight.

Of course, we hope people also look at healthier options other than twinkies. Cheers!

Although theoretically correct (energy stored = energy in – energy out), it’s not always that simple.

The twinkie diet worked for the professor, but in my opinion, a more correct way of saying it would be “high quality calories in vs high quality energy out”.

Sure enough, at the end of the day the calorie deficit is a require prerequisite to burning body fat. No arguments.

Then it’s just the question of how easily and healthily you want to achieve same.
